Profile
Trevor James has been a partner since 1979. He has overall responsibility for the firm’s charity and voluntary sector unit, which provides pro-active advice and services to organisations that range from small local groups to international charities.
He holds the Diploma in Charity Accounting and is widely acknowledged as one of the country’s leading accountants in the charity field. He speaks and writes on charity and voluntary sector issues and is regularly involved with working parties and consultations on matters of importance to the sector. In his capacity as vice-chairman of the Charity and Voluntary Sector Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales he is in touch with the latest developments in the field. He has for several years written the Institute’s budget summary for charities. He is a member of the Charity Law Association and serves on their standing charity taxation committee. Currently he is also serving on their pooled funds working party that is considering Government proposals to change the regulation of pooled charity investment funds.
His work in litigation support and forensic accountancy led him to become a founding member of the Expert Witness Institute. Both as an expert appointed by one party and increasingly as a single joint expert he has reported on a wide range of financial matters including divorce, business valuation, loss of earnings and fraud.
Trained in a firm of chartered accountants that had a substantial investment advisory division he has throughout his career been interested in this area of work.
Trevor’s personal interests are reflected in charity trusteeships that include Chichester Cathedral Restoration Trust, Chichester Harbour Trust, The Association of Church Accountants and Treasurers, Swanfield Chapel, where he is also a Sunday School teacher, Chichester Art Trust, Pallant House Gallery, St Olav Trust (a Christian bookshop) and the Sussex Community Foundation.
